Still dont know why the video wont work....  but how about a selfie....

Selfie camera on the iphone 7 is not as good as the portrait camera....
but considering... it doesnt matter...  he looks wonderful to me....

Chest drains were taken out... this was not as bad as he anticipated...
he ate breakfast and lunch, and is taking some mini naps as he watches
da movie, Die Hard.....  gave him pain meds before they pulled the drain tubes, but other than that, he says he is in no pain...

Retaining fluid still, and that isnt good, but they are giving him lasix...

i was gonna go home for the afternoon, but this unit is full, and they are short staffed, so decided to just hang here....   catch up reading on the manual....  right now we are in a corner room on the first floor..where the CVICU is located. lots of light, even though it is cloudy....  back side of the hospital....  it looks small, but it is a big building, 10 floors, plus many side wings and building added over the years.

Baptist Health Center Little Rock

This is where we will come for everything for Larry now...  the 8th floor is the LVAD floor, The Heart Transplant Center office is here...  everything...  best part is it is only 5 miles from our home....

Friday, March 10, 2017

Hmmmmmm  i came home after lunch.....  he ate....  almost the entire subway tuna that he only ate bites of last night....

I laid down and went to sleep....  nice nap..

went back at 5...  just in time.. dressing change... the more I watch, the easier it will be when it is my turn....  has to be sterile for the driveline dressing....  that is forever.....

Other incisions look great too.....

still no pain..  Larry had a nap too....  he hasnt been sleeping... last night he did with a few benedryl.....  yea...

Tonight he ate pretty good....  half of a small pizza...  he likes the pizza at the hospital.....

Larry walked a half lap......  did really good....  stepped not shuffled....  was on battery rather than wall charger...  i hooked them up.....   nurse said i was strong with it, that a lot of first timers are fumble fingers....   no sliding fingers for that...

Physical therapy came, did bed exercuses.....

Dieticians came in to visit with me....   his diet will again change as the Coumadin (Warfarin) interacts with some foods, especially vitamin K foods....  that needs to maintain level....  but I found a great site for meal planning.. Dr. Gourmet....  the dieticians use their information, but did not know there was a planner on it....  sometimes it feels really good for this old Home Ec major to teach youngers.....  my first job out of college was a Therapeutic Dietician at the hospital in Pine Bluff, AR.

Chest drain tubes will come out tomorrow...

will stay here in the cvicu until Monday, then plans are to move him to the LVAD training floor, think it is 8th...

I came in at 8am this morning, gonna go home after lunch and come back for dinner...
hmmm dinner and a movie?   He has ordered pizza....  he liked their pizza...

I feel more relaxed today...  not as worried about changing dressings, changing batteries, and just being able to deal with our new normal.....
WE is the word, they keep reminding us that it truly is WE...   as in the whole LVAD support team......

Muscle Milk.......

A week ago the dietician ordered Muscle milk for Larry,  had so much troublr getting it that I finally wnt down to the cafeteria and bought some.... now We cant get them to stop sending it...  3x a day, so I am just bringing the extras home.....

Getting ready to get dressed and go check things out....

Thursday, March 9, 2017

Gonna go see......   dont know why Wayne didnt pick up that one....
lol... i went to watch Chase change the bandage dressing for his driveline....  that still sounds bad....   especially since the nurse said the meds for his aorta was also used for E.D.     even Larry laughed, while holding his chest pillow.....

He never got up to walk... but he is getting good at feeding himself....  i am trying my best to not hand him everything.....   his blood pressure was not what they wanted, so they added lasix, dropped his fluid intake, and finally it was where they wanted...   he did spend most of the day in his chair....  switched whatever they were giving him to plain oxygen...  they said he couldnt walk with whatever it was....  so PT came and went....  he wanted to walk....   so tomorrow....

Anyway... when I went to Petco the dogs had gotten cleaned up and no longer looked like FIGS.

And I then picked up a Subway Tuna Sammich for a special someone.....  he did eat some of it....
Then we put a patient sticker on it...   leftovers tomorrow....

Tired, but feeling encouraged...  larry was wearing his controller sling around his neck when I got there this morning...  right now it is the most beautiful piece of techology that I have yet seen.....  and yes I am a techie....

This is what his new system will be like...  when he gets is all on....  ok that picture didnt come thru   Will try tomorrow...

Larry was sitting up in his chair when I got here....  said that the expensive air bed was getting to him...  he has one if those super duper chair making beds....   but the one in Florida had a massager.....

Not eating very much.... said the hospital food is yuk...  just think his taste buds are still off.
Took the arterial line out of his wrist, so that gives him better use of both hands.  Will take the foley cath out later, and expect him to walk some...  getting some good coughs in...

He really is doing good, not ready to run a marathon yet, but think he had enough of that from military days.....

I did run a marathon this morning.....  was getting the figs ready to go to the groomers, when QTπ bolted on me....  usually it is LitaBit....  but thankfully she ran up the driveway into a fenced area.. not down the street....  she did come to me after I let her explore...  so they are at the groomers....   getting their baths....
and Larry is getting his bath too.....  gonna go see....

Oh... i see the numbers that a lot of people are reading....  you should be able to post now without signing in to any thing....  let me know occasionally so I can tell who....  just a smile will let us know....  he has not read any if this, but kniws I am doing it... one day I hope he will laugh at my typing as he reads it.....

And my RV friends know me as The Sliding fingers......   if you look at the keyboard, my spelling mistakes are usually just a finger slide....  as I only type on a touch screen Ipad with my right hand and holding the ipad on my right side....  over the top if my two lapdogs....
And I Am Retired.......   smile....
It is so easy to lose track of the time and stay too long....  my back and legs are telling me though.

What first.....  well there are lots of firsts.

1.  I observed the dressing change on the driveline....  this is the power cord that comes out if his
abdomen...  it will ALWAYS need dressing changes...  i think it will eventually get this less iften
But for awhile, it will be every day....  but I can do that.  The skin will actually grow into the
Cord to form a bond, but there is always the chance it could get pulled....

2. I missed the daily controller test... Larry said I could probably have heard it at home... he said it
    Was loud.

3.  He sat in the chair for 2 1/2 hours... major feat... tomorrow he walks...  his controller has both a belt or sling....  his batteries go on a vest with special pockets....  this again is something he will get used to....  without it...  the pump doesnt pump.

4. He began holding his own water cup and getting his own ice...  he forked his own fruit, but i fed him soup.....

5. He is coughing well, which is good....  he even asked for his little breathing gadget...  to work on...

Then...... I cam home to a really clean house... thank you Christie.... she had America Cruz come clean for me......  it felt great to come into a clean home....

Tomorrow I will go in a little later because the dogs have a grooming appointment....i made it 2 months ago and had forgotten until they called to confirm.....  but decided they need it too.....

So tomorrows update will be after 11 am.....

Quick before I am on duty again....
My job for now is shoveling ice chips....
They ordered him a regular diabetic lunch, but I also brought chicken soup....
Right now he is sleeping after a pain pill....
But seems to still be in great spirits......

They say all is good...  he looks good,
Ventilator out...  cath out of groin...
8 pumps of iv fluid stuff...
New pic line

And his pump......

This is an awesome piece of engineering......

8:00  i got kicked out of the hospital

Went in to see him...  he was awake, vent not out yet...  he had been in some pain, so they upped his meds and felt like he was not yet ready to take it out..

So I went over, touched his arm and forehead and he opened his eyes... i asked if he was in pain... he pointed to the vent tube....  i said they will take it out soon..  so he then started waving his hand....  i said Larry, calm down or I will have to leave and they will restrain your arm.... we had discussed this previously with the nurse before surgery.  he waved again, but with just bending his fingers in....  i looked at him, and said are you telling me bye....  he nodded and did it again....  he was telling me to go home......  smile

Spent a few more minutes talking to his night nurse,...  she only has him as her patient and will be there all night....

I will not go in tomorrow morning until 9;30 or 10....  they will be removing arterial line and stuff.
But I will no longer be on the two hour visitation....  i can come and go...

Thank you all for your concern....

One more quick note... when I came home, my two doors up neighbor was packing up their RV... they usually just weekend... but I stopped to talk to him... his wife is a RN...  and they are leaving on a 17 day trip to florida with their 3 kids....  i told him what happened, and I am pretty sure they will join FMCA by tomorrow....

Didnt post an update when I went in at 5....  just needed to take a break and leave for a short time.....
I ended up going to Target to ge more goodies for the nurses goody box....  it was empty....

Get to go back again at 8, then will go home for the night...

When I went in at 5:00 he was aware....  his numbers were all good.....  he opened his eyes, looked at me and smiled....  that was hard, cause the ventilator is still in...  but I held his arm, and rubbed his forehead like I usually do, and he would look at me....

If I could change places with him, I would in a heartbeat...  he does not do well with pain, while I have a higher pain tolerance....  it hurts me to see him hurt...  that is the hardest part of this....  that and I am worried about learning to operate the machine...  once I get the training, I know it will be easier... and the training manual says it becomes second nature...  it is just daunting....   but Larry and I have laughed, it does come with a car charger for the batteries....  and my jeep has a real 2 prong plug with an inverter.....  meant to be.....

I will post about my 8 o'clock visit after I get home...  this body is tiring fast...  trying my best to stay focused, but i feel the exhaustion tears are close....  need to wait until i get home first....
Got to go back again....

They were reducing his sedation, so he was starting to flutter his eyes, and move a little bit...  were also changing his PIC line and his ART line...  all signs are good....

I moved back to the general waiting room....  can watch people from here....  will go back at 5, then am going to leave hospital for a break...  will come back for the 8pm visit, then go home....

Uh oh...  loud group beside me... oh well, new ear buds will help that....

Just noticed a man here with a service dog...  another with 2 small children....  i do always wonder what their stories are....   probably they are thinking the same thing about this old lady with her ipad, and bright purple rolling bag.....

Today is day 12 here,

Ok.  Just got to go back.  Color is good. Temp was good.

Back in again at 3,5 and 8.   After 8 i will go home.

Gonna take a nap.  Taking advantage of this private waiting room.

Well.... tried to nap...  but mind is too busy... did rest eyes....

when I went back... he had 2 nurses with him...  until 4 when one goes off duty...  i got several hugs from nurses on the way....  they all Call him Mr Larry...  and have gotten to know both of us....

Private waiting room will seat 10....  almost feel guilty in here by myself,  but the surgery waiting desk ladies had offered it to me early,  but they also know me by now...

there are 5 of these rooms... i chose not to use one until time for Dr Ransom to come back....  they said he pretty much insists on it for his patients family...  gonna go back out to general area after next visit.... think people watching is a distraction....

Tomorrow I will resume coming in and out as I want....  will wait until after 10 am to come in tomorrow after they get wires changed etc....

I feel really amazed at this entire process, and thankful that we are where we are...

Surgery is over.....   they moved him about an hour ago back to the CVICU, I have not gotten to go back yet... but I am doing great.....   have had a peaceful calm attitude within....  positive energy....

Dr Ransom just came in, and said all was good... that his left ventricle was deceivingly congested, and will watch him closely....   maybe remove ventilator later this afternoon....  for 24 hours he has a 1on 1 nurse.....,

I am in a private waiting room now....  Dr Ransom just told me it was my room for the day......

Larry told me this morning, that he misses me and is ready to come home, so he will work extra hard to get to.....

Woke up at 4;30.... snuggled a bit with the puppies....   they miss their daddy too.....  and are back to normal routines for the most part....  started getting dressed at 5....  then at 5;30 just sat down for a bit....   for some deep breathing and meditation....

Larry had a fair night... said he slept some, but was ready to get the show on the road... Dr Ransom, the surgeon came in at 6;40, he said all of his numbers looked good...  right after that, it got busy.

I am waiting in the surgery waiting area....  with my ipad trying to keep my mind busy...  i expect about 11;30 for him to be done....   i thing every nurse in the unit has stopped by either last night or this morning to tell him good luck....  i got some hugs too.....  he was warning them that he might be rude to them during the wakeup process...

Have my bluetooth earbuds on...  right now "les Miserables'' are singing in my ear....  larry said I sing along too loudly...  and out of tune....  singing is not a talent of mibe

Ok.... surgery in progress....   the ladies at the desk know me...  10 days here now....

Pray for Larry... I am concentrating my energy to him, so I am good.....

Monday, March 6, 2017

The next 12 hours will be long,  but the next 24-48 are crucial....

When I got to the hospital at 11, Larry had already been told by Dr Ransom that he was qualified for the HeartMate 3, this was dependent upon getting his Creatnine numbers down....  they are, he passed all of the other tests...  which was a long list.....  the HM3 is the newer model, but he has been doing the for almost 2 years.  It is smaller, and less friction inside...  which saves heart cells.  Not much info out there on it, but this was great news....  all of our nurses were hoping he would...

Speaking of nurses.  I took a big basket full of goodies, cookies, crackers, oranges, godiva chocolate to name a few....  they were so cute...  popping their heads in to say thank you....  made me smile, over and over..  i so admire these young people for their dedication....  will be adding to the treat box....

Tomorrow... i will get to the hospital around 6...  they will take him back at 7 for 7;30 start....  about 4 hours in surgery, then Dr Ransom said he likes to stay with them an extra hour or so in case of a bleed...   they could pissibly even have to take him back in, but I remember they did with me dad as well.....  i will probably get to peek in about 2, then again at 5 and at 8.   He might still have the ventilator overnight as well....  but Dr Ransom said they would not take it out unless he was there....

on wednesday I can resume my visitation whenever I want... actually they encourage it, because I am his caregiver...  i will attend all of the training sessions as well.....

I will post updates here..  just too many to try to send individuals....  but that kinda gives you a time to look for....

Larry is still very optimistic....  and excited that he can do some if the things he said he didnt get finished......

So tomorrow is just another new life...  we have said that he is like a cat....
01 heart attack, 02 pancreatitis, 07 heart attack, 08 ICD, 15 ICD, 17 HeartMate (LVAD)......
oh yea, I came in at 01 1/2

Prayers please, but I do not feel like our love story is over yet.....

Forgot to get a photo of the goody basket...  even some of the CCICU nurses slipped over....
I wish I had a photo of each of their faces.....

Early night to bed for me......

Heart Mate 3

Sunday, March 5, 2017

Doing more reading and research..... i found this
 this is Larry's heart surgeon
Dr. Ransom.......  not sure if Larry will get the Heartmate 2 or the new 3...  will find out tomorrow.

Dr. Ransom interviewed on local tv

And yet another first....
every night the dogs sleep in their own crates in our bedroom....  they have free range during the day, with not one, but 2 doggie doors, but at night for their safety and me not having to worry about them tangling with the local racoon and opossums, they get put in their kennels.... always have...

QTπ has always been good about going to hers when you tell her to.... but not LitaBit....   nope, she has to be enticed... when she was a pup, i sometimes had to chase her to catch her...  well last night after their last potty time, she headed back out....  i was just not in the mood, so I was just gonna wait her out...  i was sitting on the bed watching news when I heard her walk in and by herself, she went into her crate and laid down.....   i was in shock....  so was Larry when I told him....
Bob and Paula might have trained her for me.....

Today almost seemed like a normal Sunday afternoon....  Larry was sitting in his bed, and I was sitting beside him using my knitting spool to make a new collar for QTπ.  Just enjoying being with each other and chatting...  about mostly nothing and everything....

His kidney functions are even better today, so all of that will make for better outcomes on Tuesday...
Larry said today he is getting anxious,  like waiting for Christmas to get here...  he is so ready for this new procedure...

I just cant say enough about how great this unit...  i finally asked today what they do...  i have been trying to figure out the difference in the CVICU and the CCICU....   the CCICU is the Coronary Care ICU, they take care of most heart patients like heart attacks and is often a longer term unit.  The CVICU, CardioVascular ICU is a smaller unit.  They only have heart surgery patients, like Larry will be.  He will stay in this unit for about a week, with each nurse only having one or maybe two patients to care for....  it is a smaller unit with only 15 rooms.. only 6 were occupied this weekend,,,,  because they do not take other heart patients....

The doctors are also really personal.....  the first night the doc we saw was listening to my "report" on his cinditiin, and finally asked me..... are you a nurse?   I laughed and said no, but my sons and their wives are doctors...   he was back in today, and he was doing so e measurement with the "swan" catheter that is still in his neck....  he saw that I was curious, so he proceeded to explain it to me.  He drew a pic of a heart on the white board while explaining, and Larry said, wow, even I understood that....    this same doctor was asking Larry about his Ipad pro, which he had been using when the doc walked in......   super guy....

Today was changing of the line day....  i couldnt help myself...  the tubes were interesting....
